Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

OMPA is seeking qualified applicants for one open position, which may be filled as either an Electric Apprentice Line Worker (Entry-Level) or an Electric Journey Line Worker (1st Class), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. This position involves technical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of power lines and associated infrastructure serving OMPA and its member cities

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Common Responsibilities (Apprentice & Journey Levels):

  • Assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electric systems.
  • Climb poles and operate bucket or digger derrick trucks.
  • Work safely with high voltage systems under supervision or independently, depending on level.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in or conduct inspections of lines, poles, substations, and equipment.
  • Respond to outages, including emergency and after-hours work.
  • Works closely with city leaders/stakeholders in completing projects.

Apprentice-Specific Duties (Entry-Level):

  • Work under close supervision on energized and de-energized circuits.
  • Begin formal apprenticeship training through MESO after six months of service.
  • Learn to operate and maintain line tools and equipment.
  • Perform basic line work duties as skills are developed.
  • Show progression through apprenticeship levels over time.

Journey Line Worker-Specific Duties:

  • Perform advanced line work independently, including substation maintenance and system troubleshooting.
  • Lead or assist in substation switching and oil sampling.
  • Operate and maintain all line equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Mentor apprentices and ensure safety compliance in the field. 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Apprentice Line Worker (Entry-Level to Step 4):

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must obtain a valid Class A CDL within six months of hire.
  • Strong interest in electrical utility work and safety.
  • Willingness to complete an accredited Line worker Apprenticeship Program.
  • Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions

Journeyman Line worker (1st Class):

  • Completion of an accredited Line worker Apprenticeship Program.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience with overhead/underground systems.
  • Valid Class A CDL required.
  • Extensive knowledge of powerline construction and repair.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, NERC and FERC regulations.
  • Ability to read blueprints and operate all types of related electrical line equipment. 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Regularly walk, climb, and balance.
  • Frequently required to stand, reach, kneel, stoop, and use hands/fingers.
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 25 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires good vision including color, depth, and focus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Travel and overnight stays may be required.
  • On-call responsibilities may apply.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather conditions.
